A book about life, in the small town of Knockemstiff. This is a stand-alone book, as the mystery is fully resolved in the story. Though I believe anyone who has not read any previous books would enjoy this story more if they read the other books in order first. Also you will want to read the next book in the series to find out Savannah's decisions regarding her relationship with Detective James Woodley and her Hair Salon, and what Savannah and Sarah decide to do for a new school for Sarah to attend. I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger, just a 'want' to read more. There are quite a few characters and a lot going on. I wasn't lost or confused. I just believe I would have enjoyed it even more if I had read the previous 4 books. It was a great cozy mystery that was a quick fun read. I was given a copy from the Author/Publisher and was not compensated in any way for a review, this review is my honest thoughts and opinions on the book.
I have read a few of Ms. Barker's books. While her stories are fairly good and entertaining, I find the lack of editing very distracting. Ms. Barker's interest seems to be to get out as many books as possible as opposed to making sure she is producing a quality product. To me, correct grammar and punctuation are essential to a good story. I will not be reading anymore of her stories.

This storyline was different and was about moonshiner. I liked the ending as it talked about the characters and their lives.
I so thoroughly enjoyed this book. Disappointed when it ended. The story was fun, light and entertaining. I cannot wait to read more books but this author!!
I loved this book about a small town named Knockemstiff. The characters were anything but stiff. They were fun and qurcky. The story is a mystery about what happened to Joe. Everyone has a theory and they are willing to tell it. You won't be able to but it down. I received an arc copy that I downloaded on my computer. I enjoyed it so much, that I bought the book for my kindle today.
Life continues on in Knockemstiff, LA after Pete wins the hair contest in New Orleans and Betina is pursuing a career in modeling. Savannah and Nellie head into the swamps to meet Old Joe and Rudy, Nellie's husband, to discuss the results of a taste testing of new flavors for the legal moonshine. Only upon reaching the cabin of Old Joe, they find him dead. Even though it looks like a suicide, Savannah's flame, James Woodley the investigator from New Orleans comes to town. Add in the new pastor the "holier than thou" Dr. Chaarles Fimbus who threatens to turn the town into a "dry one" and you have a great story line. On top of all that Savannah has some decisions to make regarding Sarah and if her life will continue in Knockemstiff or if a move to New Orleans and James Woodley are in her future. I really enjoyed book 5. Just as exciting as the other 4. Inpatiently waiting to find out what happens next.
This is a fun whodunit with colorful characters, a suspicious death, and Bayou charm that kept me glued to the book from beginning to end. I really liked Savannah Jeffries, owner of Teasen and Pleasen Hair Salon, and her interactions with the other area residents especially Investigator, never inspector, James Woodley who comes from New Orleans to help local police, and her precocious and charming seven year old Sarah Jameson. Even though this is the fifth book in the series, I had no problem reading it as a standalone. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy and enjoyed it so much, I purchased all five books in this series so I can "catch up" on the happenings in Knockemstiff, Louisiana.
